the Maine Election Results is all over the news today. In addition to the regular elections, Maine is putting to vote the question of gay marriage. The first results from the Maine elections on November 2, 2009 are in starting to be reported. There were 7 ballot initiatives that were voted on and the results that have already been decided are as follows:
Questions 2 (excise tax), 3 (school consolidation), and 4 (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) were all voted down. On the other hand, Questions 5 (legalizing medical marijuana) and 6 (transportation bond) passed the vote.

Obama carried both states last year. But the GOP gubernatorial candidate racked up huge margins among independent voters, notwithstanding the White House’s efforts to boost the Democrats.
Republican Bob McDonnell won the race in Virginia, beating Democrat Creigh Deeds. It marks the first time Republicans won a governor’s race in the state since 1997.
And in New Jersey, Gov. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., was defeated in his reelection bid by former federal prosecutor Chris Christie. The heavily Democratic state was considered the party’s best chance to steal a victory in a tough electoral climate.
The results are likely to be interpreted as a rebuke of the president and Democrats in Congress, though Democrats cautioned that the results should not be over-interpreted.

In May, Maine’s governor signed an order which legalized gay marriage in Maine. Question 1 during the Maine election in 2009 centers on a “citizens veto” of legalized gay marriage.
So far, whenever a gay marriage repeal has been placed on a ballot, it’s been passed. Citizens for the most part aren’t as excited about gay marriage as you may think. Why not? Aren’t we free to love whoever we want? According to many people’s belief systems, they don’t want their children to be taught that marriage between a man/man or woman/woman is acceptable.

Maine voters were tilting against a law allowing same-sex couples to marry, as officials counted ballots late into the night in a closely fought referendum that saw unexpectedly high turnout.
With 60% of precincts reporting, 51.6% of Maine voters were in favor of repealing a law that authorizes same-sex marriage, versus 48.4% who would retain the law.
Rolling back the law would be a setback for gay-rights advocates and make Maine the third state to reject gay marriage in a popular vote, after California and Hawaii, It would also end a recent string of wins for gay marriage in the New England region.
The other states that grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples — Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and New Hampshire — have done so via legislative vote or judicial ruling.
Hmmm.. will Maine finally allow same-sex marriages? We better wait and see. Whatever their decisions will be, this will surely affect the lives and the politics of Americans living there.
