Roger Federer is a Swiss professional tennis player. He used to be the World No. 1 Tennis player with 237 consecutive weeks of domination from February 2, 2004 up to August 17, 2008 when he was dethroned by his arch-rival Rafael Nadal. He is considered as one of the best male tennis players since the Open Tennis era started. He has quite a few grand slams to his credit although he has not yet won a Clay Court Title as yet.

Roger Federer managed to win in 13 Grand Slam Tennis titles. He won three times at the Australian Open; five times at Wimbledon Open and five times at the US Open. He could have been lined up with the all time high of 14 Grand Slam titles–a record currently held by Pete Sampras.

Roger Federer also won four Tennis Masters Cup titles. He won an Olympic Gold in the Men’s Doubles and 14 ATP Masters Series titles. Since 2005, Federer has appeared in 10 consecutive Grand Slam Men’s Singles Finals! That is no mean feat! He has consistently proven to the world that he is a player to beat in the sport. He has also appeared in 19 consecutive semi-finals and won the most consecutive wins in grass courts and hard courts. Since 2005 up to 2008, Roger Federer has been awarded the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in recognition of his achievements in Tennis.

Roger Federer hails from Basel. Switzerland. His father is Robert Federer, part German and part Swiss. His mother is Lynette Federer, a South African. Although he was born in Basel, he spent his early years in Münchenstein, barely ten minutes away from Basel and close to the borders of France and Germany. Because of this proximity to Germany, Federer can speak good German, French and English, too!

You may not know it but he considered becoming a football player first before deciding to be a full-time tennis player. Thankfully, he didn’t. Otherwise, we might not have seen his great tennis sportsmanship at work!
