Pumpkin passion hits Chattanooga and most other places in the United States just before Halloween. According to the Census of Agriculture, 1.1 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced annually in the United States. The value of all pumpkins produced is about a $141 million. Tennessee growers produce over 1 million pounds. A huge number will be carved into jack-o’-lanterns or used in decorations.

Pumpkin lore

The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for “large melon” which is “pepon.” “Pepon” was changed by the French into “pompon.” The English changed “pompon” to “pumpion.” American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.”

The origin of Halloween dates back at least 3,000 years to the Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced “sow-ain”). It meant “summer’s end” and was a festival to celebrate the harvest. It also was thought to be the best time to contact the dead to say goodbye or ask for assistance.

Mariners catcher Rob Johnson, who was right-hander Felix Hernandez’s personal catcher for most of the season, will have surgery on Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, the first of several surgeries he faces in the next several weeks.

In approximately three weeks, Johnson will return to Colorado for an identical operation on his right hip.

After three to four weeks of rehabilitation, Johnson will return to Seattle, where he will undergo an operation on his left wrist. That procedure will be performed by wrist specialist Dr. Carlton Keck.

Anyone can find themselves in a world of trouble if they tweet something their employer or followers deem inappropriate. But when you throw in the high visibility of professional sports leagues like the NFL, Twitter becomes a platform for media fires that are sparked by words tweeted in the heat of a moment.

Larry Johnson [@Toonicon] of the Kansas City Chiefs is the lastest victim of his own Twitter (Twitter) doing. After a loss to the San Diego Chargers, the running back turned to Twitter to insult the team’s head coach, Todd Haley. The comments sparked an exchange between Johnson and Twitter user @jaredlaunius, with the latter bringing up a nightclub incident that Johnson plead guilty to, and Johnson, in turn, responding with a very clear homophobic slur.

Twenty nine year old Johnson is a football running back for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League.

He was drafted by the Chiefs 27th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played college football at Penn State.

During his collegiate career, Johnson was a standout running back for the Penn State Nittany Lions. In Johnson’s senior year, he rushed for over 2,000 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per carry.

He attended Penn State University, where in 2002 he rushed for over 2,000 yards in a season without winning the Heisman Trophy, despite doing so with fewer carries than any other running back in the exclusive 2,000 yard club. Johnson averaged 8.0 yards per carry during the regular season, a mark that would have been an NCAA record.
